That's a nice secret they don't tell you in those annoying TV ads. App this. (n)

But that PSIP data is almost useless. It only goes out to a day (if you are lucky) or less depending on the local station. Low powered stations are not required to post anything (unless something changed). It's back to a "TV Guide" subscription in paperback fashion. ;)
Not useless.

"Record xyz" doesn't need to know it's on Tuesday at 8, it just needs to record it when it sees it, and know what it's recording.

Perpetual DIY thoughts, musings, learnings, and small projects

You mean physically hold it in place against the backside aluminum angle until the jb weld cures sufficiently? And hope that it doesn't crack and fall apart as the wire flexes as I open and close the solar panels, hook/unhook them, etc?
JB Weld is darn tough. If "physically hold it in place" is a timeframe issue (not enough clamps!) and you are reasonably dexterous/competent, I recommend using "JB Kwik"* instead.

*Godddddammmit! They apparently rebranded as "JB KwikWeld" - but you get the idea. Fast curing epoxy. Sticks to lots of shit, thousands of PSI pulloff strength.

Start your engines! It's Forza Motorsport

In order to make sure I don't again find myself with less than five minutes to pick a car, tune it and qualify, I started practicing for Hakone already. Looking at ruet and pittsburg's Rivals times... I don't think it's going to make a difference.
I gave up and grabbed a community tune again for this week. They really are miles better than anything I have managed to make. I'm following the "Can't use the same car twice" optional rule Ruet joked about a few weeks ago, though.

So getting with the Japan thing, I've got a Silvia for this week.

Man, last weeks race had an incredible opening 10 laps or so. The battle for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th was one of the best I can recall ever being in. Between Kilkenny's handling, amazing outside passing, and pure steel nerves, my exit and straight-line speed, and Penguin's more balanced approach, there were so many passes, and none of us could really get clear of the others.

After market tumult, Trump exempts smartphones from massive new tariffs

Why are you still using Google anything? Every other substitute is superior.
Umm BS. Sorry I'm going to call it when I see it. I've yet to find ANY mapping software that isn't garbage in comparison to Google Maps. Even Organic Maps using OpenStreetMap really is not good. You may hate it. But it still is far and away superior to pretty much everything out there. I absolutely am not a Google fan, but I'm going to give credit where it is due. Google Maps, Waze, Google Earth, Google Photo, Google Translate are easily class leading products. That said it really has suffered from enshittification over the last 7 years.

Actually from the standpoint of causing the most chaos it is brilliant.* By exempting some things and not others. By giving everyone but China a 90 day reprieve, but jacking up tariffs for China you've fragmented a possible unified front against his BS.
This has always been the Orange Shit Stain's plan. Cause chaos in a way that it seems like he's using a pair of 20 siders to figure out his next action. You can't defend against insanity or random actions.

That said the leaders of the world aren't dumb. Even with the 90 day stall on tariffs you can bet your ass everyone is talking with everyone else. No one with an ounce of sanity thinks that Trump is going to back down after 90 days. Well outside the morons on Wall Street. Socks when up when they have zero reason to.

*And when I say brilliant I mean in a totally random, totally unplanned sense for him. There is nothing brilliant about totally f'ing over the economy for your friends to get to pull a reverse Trump 'n Dump.
From an overseas perspective, the big problem is that you elected him again after the last shitshow. Once is an accident, twice is a fundamentally unreliable partner. If Trump disappears tomorrow, your reputational damage remains. Who(m?) may you decide to put in charge next or four years after that?

It's pretty clear this is exactly the project 2025 path. The actual goal is not to get favorable trade deals, change the trade balance, or increase US manufacturing exports. The goal is zero trade, or nearly so as part of a path to completely isolate the US from the rest of the world, to make it easier to implement their christo-fascist fantasy theme park.

Quoted for emphasis. They brazenly published the P25 document and no one paid any attention! Pathetic. Puts the lie to "the wisdom of crowds".

🦄 Domestic consequences of the 2024 US presidential election: the quickening

Can you be specific about how Trump is ignoring a SCOTUS ruling? I don't have a NYT sub, and the headline doesn't match your assertion.
When I went and had a look, it was the second subject in the link - I'm guessing this is some kind of "live updates" feed. I believe the following excerpt is short enough to be within Fair Use:

"In a brief legal filing, the Justice Department reiterated its view that courts lack the ability to dictate steps that the White House should take in seeking to return the man, Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, to U.S. soil, because the president alone has broad powers to handle foreign policy."

Of course he did. Which product/industry will he exempt next? What a stupid, self-inflicted mess.

Ehh. One problem with recession is that it is defined as two quarters of negative growth. This means it technically takes six months to be defined as happening.
In the case of Liz Truss in the UK, it took less than the shelf life of a lettuce. She fired those who refused to support her economic plan, but the markets spoke very quickly and sharply. The US is somewhat insulated from sharp increases in the cost of debt, but we will see what happens to US bonds after this latest shitshow.

In this episode of 'Things That Piss Me Off'.........

Hot dogs

The thing about not matching bun count has been known for ages but shrinkflation has brought a new low

Five-packs of franks
🤬
But still buns in 8-packs. There's no solution except to buy eight five packs of franks and 5 eight packs of franks.

With the old numbers, you'd still have been committing to eat 40 hot dogs.

It isn't the sin of gluttony unless you want to eat them, right?

Time to send the Canadian Mounties to El Salvador to conduct a humanitarian extraction I guess.
No no no...
I'm sure the popular culture version of mounties is wonderful, but they have a terrible track record with brown people. They were founded to keep the natives away from white settlers through threats of violence and use of force, and that hasn't really changed much.

Experimental drug looks to be gastric bypass surgery in pill form

I think there might be something to the fructose hypothesis. The idea that certain types of calories do less to decrease appetite than others. Signficant amounts of simple sugars, especially fructose, would typically be available only for a brief time each season, when the fruit was ripe. This signalled binge overeating to fatten up before winters lean months. It seems to me the signal may be associated with rate of change of blood glucose in conjunction with a sweet taste. Non nutritive sweetener in conjunction with highly processed carbs trigger the syndrome. Crappy food makes you hungrier than less readily available sources of carbohydrate calories.

Have you had a house built rather than buy existing? Where? Why?

Once you are building, systematically take (and organize) photos so you know where things are before walls and floors go in (electrical, plumbing, ventilation, etc...).

Also, run network cable (or fiber if that's your thing). It will never be easier and even if it's just a backbone for your wi-fi APs, you'll thank yourself later.
Through conduit, so you can pull new cables if you have to.

Here is the double&speak that will likely reign.

The Supreme Court typically decides matter of law, rather than individual cases. If they disagree with a matter of law, they tell the lower courts what the law is, and leave it to them to apply it to the case at hand.

Trump is tlsaying that he won't defy the Supreme Court. He does not forswear defying lower courts, which is what he is doing here. The quote above assets that "federal justices" (possibly excluding SC justices--that's the interpretation they're angling for, whether or not they mean it) can't give orders to the executive branch. He (or more precisely, the folks giving him talking points) is banking on the SCOTUS giving orders directly because (1) they typically don't and (2) they may be reluctant to if they think he'll define them.

Look for the majority of the SCOTUS to take the out the Trump administration has left them, turning a blind eye to defiance of lower courts.
Well they've left it to the lower court to give the orders, so that court should give the orders and start handing out coercive daily fines for non-compliance.

ArsClan F1 2025

Jumped from 17th to 13th, so not a bad weekend. The rare race so far where it felt like I got points contributions from every slot in my team - the lowest performing one was Albon who did get some overtake points. I'd swapped out Sainz for him & it wasn't looking good mid race since Carlos was in a points position & Alex wasn't, but then Sainz took a flak hit to the side pod & was out. So a fortunate move in hindsight.

This is not entirely accurate. I live in Canada and currently see it listed as "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" in Google Maps and I'm pretty certain Canada never agreed to go along with Trump's nonsense. It irritates me every time I see it.
Why are you still using Google anything? Every other substitute is superior.

I'm cautiously optimistic that the fundamental design of our government will allow it to continue functioning as intended through these periods of system-bending chaos. I know I'm in the minority there, and maybe I'm being naive--if everything does go completely to shit, I will admit that I was wrong--but I believe we can pull through this.
The fundamental design of the US government sucks ass and always has. The most obvious flaw - the one that's really biting us in the ass right now - is that federal law enforcement agencies and the military are under the control of the executive branch. Congress can pass any laws it wants, the courts can rule however they want, and it's all meaningless if the president says he will not enforce it. There are no checks and balances on this.

America needs a ground-up rethinking of the structure of the federal government.

I have a 4th generation Tablo. It will not do what you want as it uses The Internet for its program guide, as well as requiring an app to access the recordings.

Wheel of Time recap: The show nails one of the books’ biggest and bestest battles

Isn't Loial supposed to be sort of the documentarian that at least leads to the Wheel of Time story being recorded and passed on? A very early death for him in the show. There's a lot to clean up to make it to a TV setting, naturally, some hard choices, and Loial probably frees up some budget. But still, it's not quite so literally writing the book as "A Hobbit's Tale", but he was supposed to be a cornerstone in recording the legend and passing it down to future ages.

While he recorded the battle of the Two Rivers, this is overall small peanuts for the world and just starting off.
