Thank you for Puycelcy by Georges Gaudion, and for the appointments you give me. It is a real pleasure to work together, it supports me and commits me to continue for 2020. Best wishes for you and your family. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 09:02, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year!

[edit]

I'm a bit early (you're in EST, right?) but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year and all the best for 2022. Thanks so much for all your contributions here and in particular for your positive influence on FPC. I hope you're having a wonderful start into the new year. Stay safe and healthy! Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:26, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Yes, it's 11:52 now. Happy and Healthy New Year to you! My girlfriend and I had a wonderful dinner outside, experiencing a little joy in the midst of this plague. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:52, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great. Here in Northern California, it's 9 pm and I'm already getting ready for bed because I'm planning to be out and shooting early tomorrow (a bird photographer at one of my favorite spots complained today: "If you're only showing up at 8 am – how do you ever think you're going to get a good bird photo? You have to be here at dawn")… Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 05:03, 1 January 2022 (UTC) P.S. And to be honest: I had missed some Golden eagle action that took place at 7 am today.[reply]
Have a wonderful shoot tomorrow!
All the best,

Just a ...

[edit]

Hello! I've seen your comment at Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Dülmen, Kirchspiel, Dernekamp, Wirtschaftsweg -- 2021 -- 9407.jpg. In this case, I prefer to write to you directly. Yes, there are often comments like "just a ...". It is often people who comment in this way who have different claims on the photographs. However, I often fail to discover these claims. Honestly, sometimes comments like this annoy me. I think it's sometimes quite disrespectful. Nevertheless, pictures of rather rare natural spectacles should be nominated for FP. Sometimes the assessment that something is simply photographed is said rather carelessly. I think there is something special about the photos. If we were only to award photos with an artistic claim, many images would have to be ignored. --XRay 💬 08:12, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, but I also think your photo has artistic qualities. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:21, 16 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Music

[edit]

To tell the truth I have, in the past, worked a lot in musicology and I resumed a few months ago. I present a composer in my club and today it was Anna Bon, with the question that I often ask the audience: why women are so underrepresented in musical composition. Next time it will be Hildegard von Bingen. Last month it was Erwin Schulhoff that I listen to regularly. I could live without paintings... but not without music. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 18:18, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It's great that you're doing that! I have a couple of thoughts I'll post later. All my best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:12, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Translation

[edit]

Hallo Ikan Kekek, thank you for translating the description of the File Rhein-Museum … But the old name oft the publisher "Stoks sel. Erben und Schilling" we can not translate. Apple sauce on Spargel

[edit]

Hi Ikan,

I did give the explanation about the breadcrumbs in the melted butter making it look like apple sauce on the QI page, but I also wanted to let you know that your comment reminded me of another fascinating dish I had on the same trip (which due to lighting conditions I was not able to capture): Spargelspitzen with pomegranade seeds and Salicornia (samphire greens). Very unusual, but also very tasty. Hmmm, I just bought some asparagus at the local famers market .. purple asparagus ... but no, I don't think we will try to do a dish with apple sauce xD. Have a great weekend ahead! --Kritzolina (talk) 10:25, 27 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion rationale

[edit]

Hello Mr. Ikan Ketek...Thanks for your question. In regards to your question concerning my deletion request concerning my file 1984 image of my red painted 6-inch f/15 Dall-Kirkham Cassegrain binocular telescope in Wikimedia Commons...the rationale is I "prefer" to use as I explained my "original" 1980 Bright yellow image (page two in Wikimedia Commons media) in place of the 1984 Red painted binocular telescope image. The "original" bright Yellow and Black Wrinkle image is the paint color on my Dall-Kirkham binocular telescope when it was finished in early 1980 and recognized in Astronomy magazines (S&T- Nov. 1982), Astronomy books "Building and using Binoscopes" 1st and 2nd edition) and periodicals on the subject of Telescope Making. The "Red painted Dall-Kirkham Cassegrain binocular telescope is also the "original" actual pic taken at an observing site in Southern California in 1984 (page one in Wikimedia Commons media) and "may" confuse readers who see it painted in another color (which I'm trying to avoid) but remember it as "originally" bright Yellow and Black Wrinkle...Thanks and Best Regards - Namronp Namronpb (talk) 23:06, 24 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Moved to the bottom of the page, but since you properly addressed this in the deletion thread, I'll reply there. Ikan Kekek (talk) 05:19, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion requests

[edit]

Hello Ikan,
i see your comments in some deletion requests. Good work, thank you. You can be of great help to Commons if you look at the images little by little, which are now useless. We have over 1 million of these downloads per year. Please look at the Category:Media needing categories requiring human attention and subcategories in it. For me, this is a place where there is always a rich catch for new deletion requests. Sometimes a file is useful, just needed a good category, but the obvious junk needs to be deleted, like this and this.
Sincerely, George Chernilevsky talk 10:21, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. If I want to spend even more time on this, I'll consider looking at some of those files and nominating some for deletion. :-) It's good to hear from you, George. How are things in Vinnytsia now? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:12, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Ikan.
Air raid sirens continue to sound regularly in Vinnytsia at night or early in the morning. Therefore, our morning does not start with a cup of coffee. Lately nothing has reached Vinnytsia itself from Russians, but i have friends and acquaintances in almost every Ukrainian city, so i am worried about them.
Very friendly,
George Chernilevsky talk 18:30, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. Things remain terrible, but at least the Ukrainian Armed Forces have recaptured a lot of territory. I really can't imagine what it's like to live in a country under continuous attack and partial occupation. I had a small taste of what it's like to be under attack on and in the aftermath of September 11, 2001, and I didn't like it! -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:32, 5 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sharper images

[edit]

Hi, thanks for your comment at [2], I appreciate it. I'm currently working through my older photos to nominate them at QI, and for a long time I was using a superzoom lens that it turns out wasn't so sharp. I can't do so much with my older photos, but hopefully my newer uploads, with a new lens, look better! Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 10:15, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. I'll look forward to seeing those. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:29, 9 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! yes, indeed, the size is smaller because there was no way to use a tripod nor find a way where I can leave the camera or get some support. The resulting ISO and noise was pretty high. Regards, Poco a poco (talk) 14:55, 10 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, according to the instructions, I think I'm supposed to drop you a note that since you voted at Commons:Valued image candidates/Zebu in front of the Albert Dock warehouses 1.jpg, the scope has changed, and you might want to have a look and confirm your vote? your opinion on some fotos of me

[edit]

Hey, I hope you doing well!

You lately reviewed a foto by me and mentioned that it might be a FP candidate. It surprised me; I didn't think much about the picture, to be honest. I wanted to know if you see anything near a FP here. I tried to work on my sharpness in the newer ones. I also wanted to highlight some of my past work and maybe you see sth you like. Feel free to nominate, I am not sure what is a FP and what not :). I do not expect a long review or sth like that.

Best regards, A,Ocram (talk) 17:29, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How are you? My 2 cents, which are worth even less with this inflation :-): (1) Good QI and composition, but probably not sharp enough for FP and I wouldn't nominate it. (2) Not a great enough composition to me - again, for whatever that's worth. (3) Not sure. I like it. I might vote for it if it were nominated, but people might complain about the crops; you have to crop it somewhere, but it's hard to please people. (4) I've been to Sensoji. :-) I'd like this photo better if it included all the boxes and all of the cloth. (5) I don't think the upper reaches of the lighthouse are sharp enough, and I'd want you to crop to the left of the nearby post. (6) Fix dust spots on the leftmost building, to the left of it and to the left/above it. After you do, it's a good photo. The sharpness is not overwhelming, but you shot it around sundown, right? I don't have a clear read on whether it would get promoted or not. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:30, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ya, we all suffer under this! let's hope and work on it so that it gets better... Okay, so my sharpness is still a problem, I see. (3) ya, the crop was also a problem in the QI discussion; I cannot find a better way on the bottom. (4) I only have photos with other people :(. (5) changed the crop, and tried to sharpen it. (6) fixed dust spots. Yes it was sunset, and the bridge wiggled a little bit, I was even surprised to get a rather sharp picture out of this. Thanks for your feedback! it is nice to read what I can improve on the photos. kind regards --A,Ocram (talk) 08:02, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
How's it going? (5) now looks very strange at full size on my 22.5-inch monitor. I suppose it's a bit oversharpened now. I like the composition now, though. All my best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:16, 17 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
true, it is actually! thanks for you opinion :) have fun with in your future work here, all the best A,Ocram (talk) 20:25, 30 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Possible FP from QI discussion

[edit]

Hi Ikan,

I did not want to overload the discussion on the QI candidate page, but I was thinking the same thing about the aerial picture from Bangladesh. Rocky, would you be able to reach out to the photographer for a better name, to suggest an more suitable name, and/ or to let us know if moving it would be ok, or if it would impact WLM Bangladesh processing? Would you want to nominate? I would also be happy to nominate the image once the rename is done. Kritzolina (talk) 14:11, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kritzolina I appreciate your interest. The uploader is a newbie. So I prefer to rename the file instead of waiting for him. Hopefully this will not affect the WLM Bangladesh treatment, the campaign just ended yesterday. I update the description along with the name as well. I would welcome your nomination for FP.--Rocky Masum (talk) 16:42, 1 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So I will go ahead and nominate the image from Bangladesh, perhaps you would like to nominate the candidate from India? There is another candidate from India I probably will nominate later perhaps as well. Thanks Ikan and Rocky! --Kritzolina (talk) 19:21, 2 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Portrait Silvester III vs Benedict X

[edit]

Good morning, as elaborate as the processes are, they must be analyzed when they lead to the opposite of what should be. The facts are however indisputable (all the evidence was given in the argument used for the deletion request: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Deletion_requests/File:146-Sylvester_III.jpg): 1) This portrait is that of Antipope Benedict X 2) By refusing to change anything, we maintain false information on Wikipedia 3) You threaten me with punishment because I am disturbing. So the process mentioned above results in the one who maintains the false information treating the one who rectifies the error as a disruptor. It questions. And to accentuate the desire to analyze this problem using only reason, I will say that the method I used to remove this portrait is the same as the one I adopted for the first time for the same problem. With success, my interlocutor having found nothing to complain about. Thus, another imaginary portrait showing Silvestre III well is now used mainly on Wikipedia to illustrate this pope. But as long as nothing changes with this one, errors will remain. Not being a specialist as I said, I leave it up to you to take my place in solving this problem (since I remind you that you have all the proof of the error, you know, you tell me, the good method, and I have no doubt that, like me, you track down errors on Wikipedia). There should no longer be a link between the portrait of Antipope Benedict X and that of Silvestre III. If nothing happens, however, I will ask for a new deletion, because inaction would result in maintaining the error. Reason demands that we come out of this problem from above and not from below. I have no doubt that this is the method you will follow. Best regards. Sumenol (talk) 05:54, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have no interest in discussing this, nor any expertise. I gave you my advice on where to discuss this. -- Best, Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:13, 27 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikivoyage

[edit]

Hi Ikan, hope you've been doing well.

Am I the only one who feels that some of the recent discussions we've been discussing, such as whether AC's work could stay, or whether copying content from Wikitravel should be allowed, are no-brainers? I mean, there are policies that clearly indicate that the answer to both of these are no, but am I the only one who feels that some users like to disregard policy, citing ttcf as their excuse?

Either way, hope you have a great winter; stay warm!

--SHB2000 (talk) 07:10, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! No, I feel the same way, and I've also thought seriously about how long I want to continue as an admin. I also have serious reservations about promoting polluting travel, much as I love to travel (but don't do it that much). The last few years have been very difficult, and the shit is really going to hit the fan with global warming more and more. I have to hope that engineers like the young people I teach technical writing to will help save the human race from itself, but I am very much afraid that when I hopefully reach old age, life will be hell for almost everyone. Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:45, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually thinking about leaving the project during the time when various users advocated for keeping the work of a banned bigot, only keeping my sysop privileges to revert Brendan's edits. The fact that two users fail to realise that various users have tried so hard over the last 10 years to differenciate the two sites thinking it'll be sunshine and roses if content is copied over, just because it's legally possible to do so, is unproductive at best, and otherwise plain annoying and cumbersome.
Regarding travel, in the past few years, I've been extremely careful of my carbon footprint, and have been trying to do whatever I can to reduce my carbon footprint. It's also a real shame that most governments have been doing js to tackle climate change, often misleading the public with false promises.
Anyway, let's hope that humanity will save itself from destruction. But for the time being, I hope we don't have anyone else more unreasonable in citing ttcf as a reason to copy content from Wikitravel. --SHB2000 (talk) 08:57, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Amen to that. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:59, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This long later, I'm surprised by the second latest comment to that thread (by Mrkstvns) who claims that, to improve Wikivoyage's SEO, the "nonsensical" ban on copying content should be removed. How ironic! SHB2000 (talk) 01:26, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's ignorant at best. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:54, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
At least, I'm glad that nearly everyone disagrees with that user (I say nearly because I'm not so sure about that one user who gave an out-of-order answer). SHB2000 (talk) 00:18, 18 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

deleting files from Wikimedia Commons from user Thomas 2929

[edit]

I have used a number of files i.e. the following files: File:Близницы Андреас.jpg File:Маркус 2.jpg File:Шуя Андреас бирка.jpg File:Взвод Гринлада.jpg File:Полиция.jpg

In the process of learning how to use Wikipedia, that is, how to write articles in a personal sandbox, articles were not published.I downloaded them and used them to understand how to write an article, how it would look if I used one or another template, how to fill in, where to write what, how to select sources. Now I have figured it out and it is no longer needed. More of these files are photoshopped. Tomas2929 (talk) 17:53, 16 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy New Year!

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year, Ikan!

The other day, I was having a conversation with someone about holiday cards and social media. It occurred to me that, in the years since I left Facebook, the site I use most to communicate with people I like isn't actually a social media site at all. If you're receiving this, it's pretty likely I've talked with you more recently than I have my distant relatives and college friends on FB, at very least, and we may have even collaborated on something useful. So here's a holiday "card", Wikimedia friend. :) Hope the next couple weeks bring some fun and/or rest. — Rhododendrites talk19:54, 22 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Two images

[edit]

Hello Ikan. May I ask for an opinion about two images? They are File:Dancing House - night.jpg and File:B6A3048-HDR-Pano.jpg. They were both uploaded by a participant of the Czech educational programme Senior Citizens Write Wikipedia, and I was considering nominating them for a quality image or featured picture. However, I am slightly afraid that an unsuccesful nomination might be quite discouraging for this contributor, and so I am seeking an unofficial opinion first. I would really appreciate your advice. -- Jan Kameníček (talk) 23:05, 9 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The first image is way below the minimum size of 2 megapixels, so don't nominate it for either unless there's a much larger version. The second is certainly big enough, sharp, and an interesting view. I don't know whether someone might disagree with the colors or something, but I'd encourage you to either post to COM:Photography critiques for some other opinions or just nominate it at QIC. Depending on its reception there, it could be reasonable to nominate it at FPC, too. I think it could be a serious FPC candidate, and I might vote for it there, but no commitment.
Best,
-- Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:17, 10 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi! I've noticed that you sometimes participate in discussions about freedom of panorama in deletion requests. Could you take a look at this? I think a direct replica building of the old structure should not be copyrighted, but I'm the author of one of the pictures. In the end, my voice could be ignored. What is your opinion on this matter? If you are pro this deletion, that is ok. I just want someone else to provide an opinion, not only the removal requester and authors. It's usually like this, with the number of requests, nobody else notices. I was thinking about writing at the Village Pump, but I'm not sure it is helpful. It's hard to find someone expert in this matter who is willing to help, not just score on more removals. -- Jakubhal 05:18, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Jakubhal. I saw that thread, but I am not familiar with the laws of Myanmar, a country which is lawlessly ruled by a murderous military dictatorship whose laws on copyright seem unimportant to me. I have no basis for having an opinion about the issue at hand, though. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:54, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I commented, anyway, but I suspect the files in question will be deleted per COM:PCP, as no-one is likely to ask for or get a response from that regime on whether replicas of the Shwedagon Pagoda are copyrighted. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:58, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Ikan. I share your opinion about the current state of affairs in Myanmar. I met many wonderful people there, and I was heartbroken to see what happened in this country a few years after my visit. I also agree that, most probably, these photos are going to be deleted anyway. Still, thank you very much for your voice in the discussion. -- Jakubhal 08:21, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Calviac picture

[edit]

Hello Ikan,

On page [3], please, can you explain what you mean when you wrote : "Looks old enough to be PD-Art" ?

In Europe, Copyright Duration Directive CD 93/98/CEE states that pictures are in public domain 70 years after their author died. These pictures were taken at the beginning of the 20st century. if the photograph were 20 years old in 1920 and was dead when he was 70, the date for falling in public domain is : 1970 + 70 years = 2040. We are in 2023, so before 2040. There is a risk that the picture is not public according to the law.

What is your opinion ?

Best regards - Thierry (talk) 19:42, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I thought the image looked older than that, but I don't know, and of course you're right that it would depend on factors including when the artist died. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:44, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, you mean if the photographer were 20 in 1920? How about if they were 50 in 1900? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:45, 22 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Ikan,
The photograph is unknown, The date of the picture is not known.
A possibility, without more information, exists that the real author of this picture died less than 70 years ago.
It may be a distortion of my mind due to my job.
But are you ready to travel deep in a submarine not assessed that can implode near the Titanic ;-) ?
Are you ready to lay for this your head (or an other part of your anatomy;-) on the block in this case ?
Best regards - Thierry (talk) 19:22, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please discuss deletion requests in the relevant threads. Thanks. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:59, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A random question

[edit]

Hi, Ikan, seems like a random question, but do you think the map depicted on the right will pass a QI nomination? It doesn't have roads marked (as that will make the map overcrowded), but I don't want this map to go to waste like this one did (i.e. the oppose vote that was purely based off an inaccurate source). TIA, --SHB2000 (talk) 01:49, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think Uberlandia would look better below the city, Belo Horizonte probably above the city, and Brasilia a bit further to the left. Then I'd support a nomination, but I really don't have a clear read on what other QIC voters would support. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:33, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the feedback – I tweaked the positions of the three city names as per your suggestions, though it's quite hard to find a perfect spot for Belo Horizonte without interfering with the region label (Central). I'll nominate the map, but in addition to what you mentioned, I fear it'll be opposed on the grounds for non-existent reasons. SHB2000 (talk) 09:53, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hello Ikan and @Frank Schulenburg: Maybe you have seen the last withdrawing messages (1, 2) of our new FP regular TheBigBookOfNaturalScience? I understand “This is officially my last straw” so that they already want to leave us again. I consider this regrettable – while they may not have realized all difficulties of the FP process, a contributor who nominates especially photos of weather phenomenons was a valuable addition of our usual nominators. If you feel the same, has by any chance one of you the time and power to leave TheBigBookOfNaturalScience a short explaining and encouraging message? I have done that once, but right now I have not the composure and power to do that. Please don’t take any offence, I just wanted to ask! --Aristeas (talk) 13:57, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't take offense, but if someone is so thin-skinned that a lack of votes is the "last straw," they are not going to do well at FPC. I think a better solution is for other users to nominate the types of photos TheBigBookOfNaturalScience has been nominating, but making sure they are really top-quality or so amazing that they seem likely to pass. I don't think begging a user to continue nominating more photos will work. Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:45, 19 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just left the user a message. Best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 16:07, 20 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm seeing scans of text pages for pages that are in complete djvu volumes also uploaded? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 22:25, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks. So did you have a question or want me to react to something? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:21, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The concern, I have is that the single page scans of text in this category, are redundant to the files which represent the complete volumes. This means that they are potentially out of scope as "unused text pages, duplicated in combined or consolidated volumes". Even with the proposed change in scope discussion, "Duplicated" text pages of the kind I'm seeing here would still be out of scope. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:26, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

These look like self-published materials, albeit on something that is linked with education methods. I'd like a second view before filing a DR on scope grounds. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:26, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On the question about when it dates from. Nazi era is the best answer I can give for now. The airbase this build is located was founded in 1938 shortly after the "Anschluss" (annexation of the Federal State of Austria into the German Reich). The mural also shows typical Nazi symbolism like the heroic soldier and working man (who the Nazis claimed to fight for). The mural was neglected for a long time (since it dates back to the Nazi era), but was renovated shortly before I took the image. --D-Kuru (talk) 16:40, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Suur-Suomen kartta.png

[edit]

Hello, I was just curious about your argumentation, as this map was basically kept due to your comment and a very non-sensical one of one of the map "contributors". Would you please elaborate on how "now that this unsourced map is used on many websites we cannot delete it"? This really doesn't seem like a valid argument at all, to me at least. --HolonZeias (talk) 16:27, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just read COM:INUSE and COM:NPOV. Those are Commons policies, not my arguments. If you want to argue with them, you have to argue on the relevant Commons policy talk pages. Thanks. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:22, 5 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A misunderstanding

Hi, Ikan Kekek. Regarding our discussion at [4], let me first clarify that in my context I had no intention of ridicule definitely, only to express my confusion and incomprehension. I'm not an English speaker or a Swede and if this remark offended you I feel sorry and retract my thoughtless words. In addition, I feel that our debate there doesn't help to clarify some facts, so I suggest deleting irrelevant comments. 0x0a (talk) 03:17, 21 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Florence

[edit]

[Following your QIC comment]: Not still traveling, no. Got back a week ago. Spent a week in Florence with a packed itinerary, a week in Malta with but almost no agenda whatsoever, and when a flight was canceled one rainy night in Frankfurt. First time I'd been to any of them. Back home now, though, and still going through photos. — Rhododendrites talk14:57, 29 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ikan Kekek, thank you for your helpful reviews (and in particular with the recent help at FPC). Some thoughts on description text

[edit]

Hi! just wanted to give feedback to your comment at QIC about this picture. I dedicate much more time and effort to find the most accurate categories as possible than I do invest on the description. I don't understand why I should document the same thing twice or even three times: the category, the description and then the structured data in Wikidata. My expectation would be that we get proper tools that ease our lifes and not that photographers have to spend so much time to document the same stuff up to 3 times. If I look for a certain item and the category is accurate, the search engine will show the image containing that category, and of course the same applies if I search following the category tree. That's why I give priority to the image. There have been also similar discussions with the geodata. Having the geodata in all images of a category is my opinion a luxus, but not necessary if the category page is properly documented and contains that data. If I would earn money the hours I spend on Wikimedia I would have 60% more salary...I updated the description of that image, though. Best, Poco a poco (talk) 18:54, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, of course, but even when I've tried getting typos like Quality images candidates changed, my proposal was shot down as too much work. People have to be willing to put in work up front to make things easier for contributors. I'm willing to put in some of that kind of work, but others are not. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:08, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Absolutely Humongous File FP

[edit]

Hi Ikan Kekek,

Thank you for the welcome back. I would be happy to adjust the absolutely humongous file. Not sure exactly how to de posterized the sky. I noticed a filter in Photoshop but perhaps you might give me some further advise on how I can accomplish this? It would be nice to have a FP using this new camera at 50mp, do we have a cat for "absolutely humongous files" yet? :)

Thank you in advance for sharing your insight, I look forward to your reply.--Don (talk) 07:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for adminship

[edit]

Hello, regarding this edit, have you considered opening a request for adminship here on Commons? We always need more administrators, and in my view, you are always quite measured in your comments and very active in the deletion requests. I would certainly support your candidacy, and I'm sure I'm not the only one... Regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 02:24, 22 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I appreciate your confidence, but the reason I'm spending all this time on Deletion requests now is that the bot that should inform us at Wikivoyage when a file in use on our site is nominated for deletion hasn't been working. Once that bot is fixed, I'd love to stop taxing my hands and arms by doing all this work. I also have some doubts whether I'd really do well as an admin in the culture of this site. On Wikivoyage, when we discover that we have ambiguously-worded policies or guidelines or that we need to change something to fit a new situation, we tend to have a discussion and change the language according to consensus. Here, admins seem to do what they like to a large degree, policies and guidelines are often ignored or confusingly or inconsistently followed, and even the simplest edits to typos on guideline or policy pages never seem to be approved.
All the best,

Discussion as transfer from DR page

[edit]

Hello Ikan, as I want to avoid to further trod into off-topic at one of the DR that I opened, I go on writing here, I hope that you do not mind.

I recently wrote in the VP that I see an obligation to provide "good" data on the side of the uploaders (quoting myself here): "There are in my opinion two different crowds of Commons contributors, of course with large overlaps. One of these crowds are uploaders, the other are maintainers. The maintainers take care of operations like license reviewing, file moving, categorization and so on. I do see an obligation to provide good quality data among the uploader crowd so as to not unnecessarily add to the maintainer workload." Additionally, a fellow and established Wikipedian at DE-WP wrote this essay: "Die Grenzen der Wartung". As you give yourself a Babel-1 for German, it may be of some interest for you, too. (Follow-up below) Grand-Duc (talk) 02:47, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh shit, the editor ate half of my message... Shouldn't have used my tablet... Well, will try to reconstruct my text. Sorry... Grand-Duc (talk) 02:50, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with most of his ideas. In short, he says that the quality of the data and our projects will worsen if the maintenance capabilities do not grow along with the raw data amount. That's why I said that badly named and badly categorized files are candidates for deletion. But there are easily applied countermeasures available, which I see as being among the responsibilities of the uploaders. If they provide good descriptive data, then they make their files get into scope. In fact, such a thing happened earlier yesterday, in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bangkok-0322.jpg where we met, too. The uploader provided helpful additional information and I followed suit by happily retracting this DR.

I hope that with this, I managed to explain my motivation in an understandable way. Kind regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 03:03, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do understand your motivation. For my part, I would actually love to stop spending so much time and effort checking DRs. The reason I'm doing this is that the bot that should inform other wikis like my home wiki, Wikivoyage, when images we are using are nominated for deletion, is not working. Since it's not working, I look through the deletion requests in case of such an issue, and since I look through the deletion requests, I post my opinions, which tend toward the retentionist side. I do agree that uploaders should be helpful, so that's not a point of disagreement between us.
Best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:02, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back!

Hello Ikan, I also want to wish you a happy new year (even if I'm one day late)! I hope that we can cooperate again and a lot more on editorial maintenance work here. :-) Kind regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 08:33, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like you've got things covered in that deletion request. I don't have any comment to add. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:31, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
File:KurtKouchPRM.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

two uploads in 16 years, you are my heroe. Obviously you find more fun in deleting works of others. I feel pity with you. --Arabsalam (talk) Arabsalam (talk) 11:05, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to report you to COM:ANU if you continue to act abusively toward me. Quit now. And definitely never post nasty crap to my user talk page again! Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:20, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to authoritarian characters and fanatical opponents of freedom of panorama of your kind, I won't be uploading anything here anyway. Let me be banned, pathetic as you are, banning long-time users will probably give you even more satisfaction than deleting their photos. Arabsalam (talk) 16:49, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You don't even understand. I'm a retentionist. I argue for keeping photos whenever there's a reasonable basis for doing so under Commons policies and guidelines, and my main purpose for monitoring deletion requests is that the bot that is supposed to inform sister sites like Wikivoyage when photos we are using as thumbnails are subjected to deletion requests isn't working. However, be that as it may, I will not tolerate further abusive behavior from you. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:13, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, he still continued at my talk page. Also, he thanked my DR nomination for more than 10 times in a short time. I think this was act to show the irony, but I don't know if it was considered as another kind of harassment or not. --A1Cafel (talk) 12:12, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Your emotional intelligence is really amazing. In case you do not get it, this was of course irony. How many photographers you harassed today and mobbed out of Commons? Arabsalam (talk) 13:21, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Enough, Arabsalam. I contribute mainly with photographs to the project and I am never happy to see a deletion request on my talk page, but rules are rules and I don't understand these messages/actions as an attack, as you do, but rather as a firewall. If you have material on Commons that shouldn't be there then you could get a problem in the case of a sue (along with an image problem for the project). And I can for sure say that Ikan Kekek has always been fair and looked for ways or arguments to keep stuff, not the other way around. So, please, calm down and play by the rules like we all do, they do help you at the end of the day. I also have to say that this kind of work is definitely not satisfying for anybody here, so I'm happy that there are users here who take care of that and I haven't seen abuses here so far. --Poco a poco (talk) 16:22, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So I see. Of course that's not surprising. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:27, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Of mass deletion

[edit]

When I started to look at files here the gadget "Visual File Change" was open to all, and it handles the task very well. At some point it became restricted to "Autopatroller" user rights (and rights "above" that), so I applied for those rights specifically to use the tool.

We have met reasonably often when you have disagreed with my deletion rationales, so I feel I know you. I think you have swayed me towards your thinking over time.

I've not answered your question where you posed in lest I discourage other, different answers 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:46, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Your right of 'patroller' allows the use of the tool. Yes, I just checked. 🇺🇦 Timtrent 🇺🇦 talk to me 🇺🇦 22:47, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! I'll look for that tool.
Best,
Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:09, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ikan,

the issue that was administratively treated by the Squirrel and Bastique was that the uploader subject of this DR made use of a script to upload in a botlike pattern roundabout 4000 images of currency (I stopped parsing through the VisualFileChange tool at something like the 3600th upload). Most of them were coinage, some bills. Of these 4000, only less than 20 or 30 photos of bills were OK at first glance, as likely {{PD-ineligible}} or {{PD-old}}. The remainder were (most) probably copyvios. I think that the decision to nuke the uploads was sensible as the percentage of "good" uploads was seemingly too low to invest curating time by volunteers other than the uploader himself. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 10:17, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

If there was no obvious category that could be excluded, it was a good decision, but no-one really answered that question. Ikan Kekek (talk) 16:54, 30 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Kudufshofar.webm: your somewhat dismissive comments

[edit]

At that deletion request, you made comments that seem somewhat dismissive of the nominator’s claims that they are in danger. I am particularly concerned about Special:Diff/1004727549:

I gave you a link. Click it and read.

Read what, exactly?

The COM:VRT summary says:

If a copyrighted file is uploaded by someone who is not the copyright holder, then the copyright holder needs to explicitly grant permission for the distribution of the file under a free license. If the file was previously published without a free license on an external website, then the copyright holder will need to establish their identity, even if they are the uploader. You can send permission statements to Wikimedia using the release generator.

The only explanation of how to contact the VRT is buried in the second paragraph:

In some cases, sending email to the VRT may be required in order to provide evidence that the copyright holder has given permission to publish a file under a free license. Such evidence should be sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (or a language specific address). VRTS is also used to handle email reports of copyright violations.

Again, everything (even the e-mail address itself) is about copyright.

That page suggests that VRT is not that private anyway:

Emails are handled by community volunteers. VRTS tickets in the permissions-commons queue are visible to all volunteers who have access to that queue. The Wikimedia Foundation cannot guarantee confidential treatment of any sensitive information you include in your message, although all volunteers are required to treat it with confidentiality. Users should be careful of revealing personally-identifying information of subjects or creators, particularly names, physical addresses, and emails.

At some point, I have to ask: have you read that page? Brianjd (talk) 05:53, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I did. I didn't mean to be dismissive, and I can certainly see how he could be endangered. I think he would have been a lot safer not starting a deletion request and contacting the VRT right away, but he didn't know that. If you wanted to give other advice, did you do so? I at least reacted more quickly than anyone else. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:40, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And to ask a more pertinent question: what would your advice be to someone who has a well-founded fear of being endangered by a photo or video they uploaded? -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 07:49, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I did. If you had read that page, then surely you would have realized it was confusing and not really appropriate for the nominator’s situation. I can understand why you advised contacting the VRT anyway, because it’s hard to come up with better advice than that (see below), but I can’t understand why you simply advised the nominator to read the page again when they indicated they were confused.
  • I didn't mean to be dismissive, and I can certainly see how he could be endangered. I can’t really say that your comments there were dismissive, but it’s also not really clear that they weren’t dismissive. Your references to COM:INUSE were a bit of a distraction. Would you have responded differently if the file were not in use?
  • I think he would have been a lot safer not starting a deletion request …. I think everyone (including me) already agrees with that.
  • If you wanted to give other advice, did you do so? By the time I got there, the damage was basically done: the file was already subject to both regular and speedy deletion requests (the latter of which has since been rejected) and you had already advised the nominator to contact the VRT. And by the time you posted I gave you a link. Click it and read., there was already a VRT ticket.
  • I at least reacted more quickly than anyone else. That seems to be true, and you deserve some credit for that.
  • what would youradvice be to someone who has a well-founded fear of being endangered by a photo or video they uploaded? This is a hard one, especially in light of the fact that the speedy deletion request was rejected. In general, speedy deletion requests are rejected when regular deletion requests are pending, but maybe this should have been an exception.
Commons:Oversight comes to mind, but oversight should be performed sparingly. I suspect that oversighters would be reluctant to act in a situation like this, especially without community support.
Failing those options, I would suggest choosing an active administrator and contacting them privately.
I was thinking of starting a discussion about how these situations should be handled, but I wanted to wait until the deletion request and this discussion with you had been resolved.
Brianjd (talk) 08:14, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think a discussion is appropriate. There are two situations that should be discussed in Commons talk:Deletion requests: (1) What to do when you have a well-founded fear that a photo or video you uploaded could put you, the subject or anyone else in danger; (2) what to do when you realize that you provided information that violates your privacy; and most importantly (3) how to best inform people of these options, so that they don't compound the danger by heavily publicizing it in a deletion requests thread.
I think you're right that a private approach to an individual admin would have been best, but I didn't think of that. However, I don't think VRT requests are all that public, as most users can't see them (I can't, for example).
To be honest, although I have read through the entire COM:VRT thread, I hadn't done so lately.
To answer your question above: Yes, I would have supported deletion if the file hadn't been in use. It's because it was in use that I thought a deletion request thread wasn't an appropriate place to deal with it, because deleting files in use for the safety of the subject is the right thing to do but violates the COM:INUSE guidelines, and therefore I thought the decision required a higher authority and more privacy than a deletion requests thread. Maybe that was wrong, as I certainly find his fear likely to be well-founded. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:30, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t have time to fully address this now, but see Commons talk:Project scope#COM:INUSE and files with issues other than scope. Brianjd (talk) 10:52, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding COM:INUSE, I think you would be aware from the recent whaletail DRs that Rhododendrites has been critical of COM:INUSE seemingly overriding other issues. Until the recent updates to COM:DIGNITY and COM:INUSE, Commons policies and guidelines did not seem to offer any guidance on that. Now they do, so read them and their talk pages and see what you think now.
Regarding COM:VRT, I think if the page says that it’s not really private, then that is what we have to follow. It doesn’t really make sense to say: ‘don’t post here because it attracts too much attention; post to this not-very-private mailing list instead’. This should be part of the broader discussion to be had when the time is right. Brianjd (talk) 13:16, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Go ahead, but the VRT is much less visible than threads everyone can read. I want to have only as many exceptions to COM:INUSE as necessary, because the impetus behind my monitoring of COM:DR is that the bot that is supposed to inform sister sites like Wikivoyage that a file in use is nominated for deletion on Commons is not working and hasn't worked for months. If it restarted working, I would stop paying so much attention to deletion requests here and reclaim some of my time, but without monitoring, Commons users will damage Wikivoyage without notice. Commons deletions of files in use have the unique power to damage other wikis, so they should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Ikan Kekek (talk) 15:11, 4 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(reply 1/2: actual Commons policy)
COM:INUSE does not say (and, as far as I know, has never said) anything other than: if a file is legitimately in use on another Wikimedia project, then it is automatically considered to have a realistic educational use and therefore it is automatically considered to be in scope. As far as I know, no Commons policy or guideline (including COM:INUSE itself) has ever supported the idea that COM:INUSE can override or weaken any deletion argument other than ‘out of scope’.
Despite that, there seems to be a misunderstanding among certain users that COM:INUSE can override or weaken other deletion arguments; this misunderstanding seems to appear in a lot of DR discussions. That misunderstanding led to the COM:DIGNITY and COM:INUSE updates I referred to earlier, which have not been opposed on the relevant talk pages (or, as far as I know, anywhere else).
Your phrasing exceptions to COM:INUSE seems to be a continuation of this misunderstanding. Brianjd (talk) 13:46, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For what it’s worth, COM:DR COM:D#Overview of procedures does say:
In all cases consider using GlobalUsage to get some idea of where images are in use before deletion.
I only learned that a few minutes ago. I’m not sure that it should say that, and I have not (yet) investigated how it came to say that. Brianjd (talk) 14:08, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(reply 2/2: my opinion)
At Special:Diff/988735980, I suggested that files should be deleted only if they are never acceptable. If a file is acceptable in some, but not all contexts, then it should be kept and other projects should take care to use it only in acceptable ways. On the other hand, if it is never acceptable, it should be deleted immediately, without regard for current use. File uses should never be removed solely because of a deletion request, except where the file is actually deleted.
This policy seems to address your concerns while complying with Commons policy that COM:INUSE is irrelevant to any issue other than scope.
I feel like I’m missing something here but maybe I’m too tired to work it out, or maybe I need more help from you. You said yourself that, in the deletion request that started this discussion, you certainly find his fear likely to be well-founded. If the subject’s fear is well-founded, then I don’t really understand why we should delay taking action just because the file is in use. Maybe there are other deletion requests that would better illustrate your concerns? Brianjd (talk) 14:06, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, like every freakin file deleted from Commons for not being commercially usable that left a hole on Wikivoyage because we weren't informed it was up for deletion. That's happened dozens and dozens of times, probably hundreds of times. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:16, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

To summarize, there seem to be two outstanding issues:

  1. How to handle threats to safety or privacy. This is to be discussed elsewhere after the deletion request that started this discussion is closed.
  2. How to handle files that are up for deletion but also in use. This is being discussed here.

Regarding your latest comment, I believe you, but I still don’t understand what the issue is here. Obviously, Wikivoyage and other projects should be informed when files they use are up for deletion, but that is different to the earlier issue of not deleting them at all just because they are in use (which is obviously not at all an option for copyright violations). Brianjd (talk) 02:28, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't, but deleting files that are merely unusable commercially because of FoP laws when we could upload them locally to en.wikivoyage has really fucked us, especially when they were pagebanners. Commons has to observe the rules the Wikimedia Foundation, in its questionable wisdom, imposed on it, but it should not be willy-nilly imposing them on all other sister sites, and the indefinite disabling of the not that's supposed to warn us about such deletion requests has cost me an inordinate amount of time and effort I'd really rather use to do things that are more fun. Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:48, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It isn't, but deleting files that are merely unusable commercially because of FoP laws when we could upload them locally to en.wikivoyage … If you meant files that fail to comply with the Commons licensing policy but are eligible for local upload as fair use, you should have said so! In that case, I agree with you that such cases should be handled better. For what it’s worth, Commons does temporarily undelete such files on request, so the damage can be repaired if someone is prepared to put in the work.
Commons … should not be willy-nilly imposing [the rules the Wikimedia Foundation imposed on it] on all other sister sites …. The Wikimedia Foundation imposes the same rules on all projects. In some cases, projects may (by local consensus) establish limited exceptions. One of those exceptions is fair use, but even that has rules.
If I’ve finally understood you correctly, we can consider this resolved and I can see if I can find out what happened to the bot, because its absence is annoying me too. Brianjd (talk) 02:22, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
phab:T339145. I am surprised that this bug has actually being worked on for so long and still has not been fixed. Brianjd (talk) 02:45, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
So now you understand. What you should also understand about Wikivoyage is that it did not start out as a Wikimedia site, so its fair use policies predate its fork from Wikitravel. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:55, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Does this answer your question? Trade (talk) 18:21, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. Indeed, it does. So these are records of claims of copyright by companies and organizations, and it sounds like the only way to know whether the claims are valid is to test them in court. I think that since a copyright claim indicates an intent to protect the alleged copyright in court, it would be prudent to delete any thus registered logo in doubtful cases that could plausibly go either way in court. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:02, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) I agree that Trade’s link is useful, and suggest that it be posted at the DR. Brianjd (talk) 02:00, 7 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am not referring to the USCOPR links; I am referring to the link you posted here, namely the enwiki reference desk link. Brianjd (talk) 23:02, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be interested in making an proposed policy for this subject to help settle any further DR discussions?
Think something like Commons:Fandom files but for the U.S. Copyright Office Public Records System instead Trade (talk) 03:23, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe. I'll try to find some spare time to look through the policy on fandom files. But the crux is really what I posted above, I think:
"these are records of claims of copyright by companies and organizations, and it sounds like the only way to know whether the claims are valid is to test them in court. I think that since a copyright claim indicates an intent to protect the alleged copyright in court, it would be prudent to delete any thus registered logo in doubtful cases that could plausibly go either way in court."
That does mean that when implausible copyrights are registered, we should disregard them, but if it's a borderline case, we absolutely should not. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 04:00, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be open for a Commons:Requests for comment where the community could discuss how to handle USCOPR entries on Commons? Things like "when implausible copyrights are registered, we should disregard them, but if it's a borderline case, we absolutely should not." could very easily be one of the options people could vote on Trade (talk) 17:27, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Sure. Ikan Kekek (talk) 18:21, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like it if we could, but your voting supposedly on my behalf was quite shocking to me, and I don't think trying to attribute that shock to a supposed bad mood suggests that you really understand you did something wrong. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:11, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It's okay to feel surprised sometimes, but don't interpret others views as an explicit yes or no unless otherwise stated, got it. Grandmaster Huon (talk) 23:14, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Images

[edit]

Dear Colleague. Thank you very much for writing a defense for my photo to be deleted. Unfortunately, a group on the Hungarian Wikipedia is in favor of deletions in both articles and images. I would greatly appreciate it and thank you if you (and perhaps other friends of yours from the Global Wikipedia) would write 1-2 lines for the files (now) marked for deletion.

These are currently being deleted: [6], [7], [8]. But recently I have been attacked for having a lot of junk in the pictures I upload (typically of Hungarian buildings, building details, public utilities, natural objects), and for that reason they will be deleted. (I believe that although my pictures are not always sharp and beautiful, they have documentary value about things in Hungary that Google Street View does not film, and sometimes there are no pictures of them on the internet.)

If you are interested, here is the discussion in Hungarian: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szerkeszt%C5%91vita:12akd#Commons. (I wrote my arguments there to other Hungarian editors, but they don't accept them. They only look at how aesthetic a picture is. Wikipedia is not an Art Album, where there can only be beautiful pictures of beautiful things - although those are good too, of course. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, where in my opinion there is also a place for manhole covers, garbage cans, and dilapidated parts of buildings.)

I respectfully ask you and your English / French / etc. friends who are at home in the world of Global Wikipedia to help me preserve my photographs, because due to the demolition of many buildings / changes in the environment, they will one day have historical-documentary value for Hungary.

You can see my many uploaded photos, many of them over the years, of things in Hungary, especially Budapest, here: [9]

Thank you very much for reading, with respect: 12akd (talk) 07:29, 13 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I call things as I see them on Commons deletion requests, but I don't think I should try to participate in Hungarian-language Wikipedia discussions, and as a result of this kind of request, you risk being accused of canvassing.
I do generally agree with your point of view, but Wikipedia is indeed not an art album and it is Commons and not Wikipedia that is at issue here. It's perfectly reasonable for Wikipedians to choose which Commons images to use in Wikipedia articles, but not to delete photos from Commons just because, as you say, they're of ordinary things that are not beautiful.
You might want to rephrase this message to make it an argument only and not a request for participation on hu.wikipedia, and perhaps start a thread on Commons talk:Deletion requests or somewhere else more appropriate that I can't think of right now.
Best,

Old logo deletion

[edit]

Hello i wanted to open the discussion on this. The reason we (brand managers from commercial businesses) request old logo deletion is because google pulls old logos from Wikipedia and this means old logos appear all over the web along with your current logo. This is damaging to commercial brands as they become inconsistent and it is confusing to audiences. This is why we request deletion of old logos to prevent this market confusion. Please consider policy change here. Could you also consider unindexing/tagging old logos so that google does not scrape them. TCSBrandTeam (talk) 14:08, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

You're not going to get a policy change by posting to a user's talk page. You could try Commons talk:Deletion policy. In any case, I will continue to strongly oppose. The options for you are to edit file descriptions and request Commons:File renaming. Memory-holing history is not a function of this site. Ikan Kekek (talk) 17:08, 4 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me
