Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Auntof6, you deleted some categories having to do with "events in Milan" that I had nominated for speedy deletion as part of the consensus in Commons:Categories for discussion/2025/03/Category:Events in Italy by region by year and another CfD. If anything, G.dallorto is the one committing vandalism here by repeatedly restoring them. Since we're all here anyway, can you please tell him to stop doing it? @Adamant1: Can you give me one or more specific categories I deleted that G.dallorto recreated? I looked at some of the categories in question, and I definitely see that there are more of these categories that should be gone.

As for consensus: I do see consensus in that discussion, but normally I think consensus should not be acted on until a discussion is closed. One thing I do see just from looking a little bit is that general music categories are included under events: they should not be. I suspect if that connection was undone, a lot of the categories would be empty and could be deleted regardless of what happens with the discussion. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:58, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category:1793 events in Milan appears to be one. A lot of the categories were recreated, redeleted by another admin, and then recreated again. So I can't tell what administrator deleted which categories or in what order at this point. Regardless, the categories were originally deleted due to being empty because of the whole thing you bring up that general music categories shouldn't be under ones for events. So they were deleted for other reasons then the CfD, which I assume is fine. I agree that a consensus should not be acted on until a discussion is closed, but from my understanding that doesn't mean categories related to the CfD can't be deleted for other reasons in the meantime. Let alone would it be valid for G.dallorto to repeatedly recreate said categories purely because of the CfD existing. --Adamant1 (talk) 11:01, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@G.dallorto: I see where you recreated some categories I deleted. It would be helpful if you explain your thinking in recreating them.

In the meantime, I think I'll look at taking general music categories out of the events categories, because they don't belong there. Doing that will probably empty some categories, which I will delete. This is not related to the discussion that Adamant1 linked to above, because it would need to be done whether or not the categories being discussed are kept. Please don't recreate any events categories unless there is something to put in them that is for actual events.

Why was I not tagged

As the individual who was responsible for categorizing the bulk of University of Connecticut athletics content and creating the bulk of the sub-category pages, I'm not sure why you didn't think to tag me in the discussion you started at Commons:Categories for discussion/2023/02/Category:University of Connecticut athletics ?

I definitely would have had two-cents to offer and disagreed with your proposal. I feel a bit annoyed you didn't give me the chance to chime-in by making me aware of your proposal that impacted many categories I had been involved in sorting. SecretName101 (talk) 01:43, 5 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@SecretName101: I'm sorry you were overlooked. However, I didn't start the discussion. I just closed it. When closing a discussion, the people who get tagged are the people who participated in the discussion, plus, sometimes, people who are mentioned in the discussion. I didn't see your name on the discussion, so I didn't tag you.

The time for notifying the creator(s) of categories being discussed is when the discussion is started. I see that notification wasn't done for all the affected categories. Even the instructions at Commons:Categories for discussion#Listing multiple categories on this "Categories for discussion" page don't say to check each category affected to be sure creators are notified. Maybe those instructions could be improved to address this. I will keep this in mind when processing future discussions of multiple categories.

Category:Nursery schools in the Netherlands

I really don't mind if these are named as Category:Preschools in the Netherlands, Kindergarten or even Kleuterschool. But if there's a correctly-named cat here that has been there for years and you choose to merge it to one of the others, then it really ought to be preserved as a redirect. Otherwise we are just breaking inbound links to it, such as from Category:Nursery schools in Belgium. For that matter, why are some countries being left at Category:Nursery schools by country? It's hard to justify another of these "all international terms must be Harmonised to some wikineologism" when it's not even being done consistently.

Yes, the nursery schools set seemed to have them, the preschools don't. So now that's another downgrade in useful function. But hey, we've wikiforced a foreign term onto another country, so that's good. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:32, 8 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/08/Category:Preschools. why are some countries being left No categories are "being left." It just takes time to do things sometimes and I had stuff to do IRL. why delete the navigation bars from these categories? Again, the categories are going to have navigation bars. It's still in the process. Of course either one are free to delete the rest of the categories and/or add back the navigation bars if they have to be done right now for whatever reason.
