Edit request: replace Cat:Images

It is requested that an edit or modification be made to this protected page.

Currently, the Main page prominently links to Category:Images on "Images", suggesting this is how to find Images and that this is a good place to start exploring the site, and a good subsite for new users to visit.

However, most categories contain images. Most images (or categories containing images) are not located in the Cat:Images branch, it's currently misleading and very incomplete. Moreover, the most useful subcategory of it, Category:Images by topic (similar to e.g. Category:Photography by subject and Category:Videos by subject) is currently up for deletion and without this subcat this place would be even less useful than it already is. (It makes little sense for people to browse images by filetype instead of by subject for example.)

Thus, I suggest to replace this link with something else, such as having it not linked at all, or linking to a broad cat like Category:Categories.

This could be replaced with a link to a Commons page that still links to or embeds Cat:Images with the info that this category is not really useful to explore/browse/find images e.g. since most categories containing images are not contained in it. Does somebody have any suggestions what could be linked?

An alternative would be to massively improve that category so that e.g. Category:Images by topic becomes truly useful and most categories containing images are contained in it but I doubt at least that this can be done any time soon and at least until then replacing that link would be due and seems needed.

Support I fell for this as a beginner, Category:Categories is a far greater place to start "roaming around" Commons categories. Mikinisk (talk) 16:34, 6 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
